Finding where all the HVAC wasted energy is going
I had the HVAC people out to have a look at the furnace and they assured me that it was in great shape and more than capable of heating our home.
I’m not much of sleuth type person. Nor do I get all wrapped up in who done its or anything of that nature. However, if solving a mystery will save me some money then I’ll happen put on my Sherlock Holmes hat and get to it. This was the case recently with a puzzling situation regarding the HVAC in our home. We are sort of new to this area and I think we totally underestimated just how tough the northern winter can be. Both my wife and I are from the south where the HVAC heat pump is the heating & cooling method of choice. In fact, neither of us had even seen a furnace before we moved up here. So when we bought our house, I really had no idea just how the furnace worked or what I was supposed to do. The HVAC system in this house is only about 5 years old and the house inspector said it was a decent enough HVAC unit. But as the winter really took hold, it seemed like the furnace was running all of the time. Yet, we were far from cozy. Actually, it felt like there was serious draft. I had the HVAC people out to have a look at the furnace and they assured me that it was in great shape and more than capable of heating our home. I told the HVAC guy what we were experiencing and how puzzling that was. The HVAC tech suggested that I buy a instant read thermometer gun. Then, go outside and scour the exterior of my house to find the leaks.
